February 9, 2011
On Wednesday, February 9, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) named Jezi Correa, a 12-year member of the Mission Clubhouse and Camp Mendocino as its 2011 Charles Schwab Citywide Youth of the Year. Congratulations, Jezi! The announcement was made during the organization’s third annual Charles Schwab Youth of the Year Luncheon held at The Westin St. Francis Hotel.
This year’s Charles Schwab Youth of the Year finalists included: Jezi, Camp Mendocino; Ileana, Columbia Park Clubhouse; Asmara, Excelsior Clubhouse; Troy, Tenderloin Clubhouse; Irlanzujuan, Visitacion Valley Clubhouse; Waynelle, Willie Mays Clubhouse. Since the fall, these remarkable young people have been formally mentored by coaches and have participated in an intensive series of workshops and activities to better develop their public speaking and essay writing skills. Each of them were recognized for their academic accomplishments, leadership skills, self motivation, moral character, and service to their Boys & Girls Club and community. Congratulations to all seven finalists!
The luncheon was attended by nearly 500 guests (twice what we had last year) including the finalists and their families; BGCSF staff, Board members, major donors; and community leaders. BGCSF raised almost $300,000 in revenue at the event, plus another $50,000 (which qualified for our 2:1 match that was announced at the event). This $50,000 will go specifically towards our new Scholarship Fund, something we plan on growing each year. Special thanks to the following:
