BGCSF’s Annual Monster Bash
Friday, October 21, 2011
BGCSF held its annual Monster Bash at Columbia Park Clubhouse on Friday, October 21, 2011. Over 120 kids participated, with all 9 Clubs represented, and about 80 volunteers from the San Francisco Security Traders Association. This event has been an annual tradition for the last 7 years, and provides our kids with a fun night of Halloween-themed games and activities, along with a healthy meal. The kids walked away this year with their faces painted, a decorated sunflower, pumpkin, bracelet, a photo of them in a silly costume and a scary story book they made themselves.
Big thanks to all the volunteers from the San Francisco Security Traders Association for helping plan the event and spending time with our kids during Halloween – they had a blast!

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco featured on The Today Show
August 23, 2011
On August 23, The Today Show (NBC) produced a story on the Edible Schoolyard at Hunters Point with Alice Waters, Jenna Bush and celebrity Jake Gyllenhaal (a national ambassador of the Edible Schoolyard program). As the first afterschool program in the country to become an affiliate of The Edible Schoolyard program, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco was chosen to partner on this media opportunity with the Chez Panisse foundation as they celebrate their 40th anniversary. The story is focused specifically on the Edible Schoolyard at Hunters Point – how we’re exposing youth to all aspects of gardening/cooking, and helping them develop healthy eating habits for life – but more largely on how universal the Edible Schoolyard has become. Click here to watch!
Special thanks to the Chez Panisse Foundation for partnering with us on this media opportunity, and to everyone who made it successful – Alice Waters, NBC Crew, Jenna Bush (NBC reporter), Jake Gyllenhaal, Dr. Nadine Burke (Pediatrician at Bayview Child Health Center). And thank you to BGCSF staff for all their leadership. And of course to the kids and staff at Willie Mays –way to go!

Vernon Davis Visits Tenderloin Clubhouse
Friday, May 20, 2011
On Friday, May 20, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis spent the afternoon with members of the Tenderloin Clubhouse, IDHC and VYDC — talking to them about his career path in sports and his passion for art. He even helped the kids finish a mural that was commissioned through the StreetSmARTS program, a joint initiative of the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Department of Public Works that connects established urban artists with private property owners to create vibrant art in an effort to curb graffiti vandalism. Members of the Tenderloin Club came up with the idea for the new mural, and worked with local muralist, Cameron Moberg. The kids also enjoyed taking pictures with the professional athlete and receiving signed memorabilia.
Thank you to Vernon Davis, Department of Public Works and The San Francisco Arts Commissions for collaborating on this event and providing a spectacular opportunity for our kids!

BGCSF’s 2011 Annual Gala
Wednesday, May 4, 2011
BGCSF hosted its Annual Fundraiser themed to Camp Mendocino’s 80th Anniversary, at San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, May 4, 2011. The event was a huge success, raising more than $600,000 and attracting over 430 guests. The event honored our historic friendship with the Guardsmen, a group of Bay Area men who are focused on enhancing and improving the lives of at-risk youth. Each summer, for over 64 years, The Guardsmen have sponsored hundreds of our Club members to attend Camp Mendocino. Only with this major partnership can most of our campers enjoy ten days in the redwood forest, having fun, making friends and learning about the environment. The night put six youth front and center, as they shared their favorite memories and activities, as well as what an integral role Camp has played in their lives.
