BGCSF has teamed up with Project Vega , a nonprofit devoted to helping underserved youth develop critical life skills using soccer as its vehicle. Project Vega is a FREE program offered at several Clubs focused on promoting active lifestyles, critical thinking, leadership and healthy eating. Project Vega offers these services through Play Vega and Vega Football Club.
Play Vega operates as an after school program at BGCSF locations and Vega Football Club provides the premium Club experience, including professional coaching, competitive play in leagues and tournaments, uniforms, and support services. Volunteer coaches also help youth with homework and reading.
BGCSF members can access Project Vega’s services at Willie Mays Clubhouse at Hunters Point , Treasure Island , Mission , Visitacion Valley and Columbia Park Clubhouses after school. When teams are not on the field playing they are assessing the other teams’ strategies and movements using new vocabulary words and technical terms specific to the game. They are also encouraged to act as commentators for the games in order to develop public speaking and analytical skills. Take this video, for instance:
Soccer is not only a great way to keep members active and thinking, but it’s an additional offering to keep youth coming back to the Clubhouses, where they explore other things like art or technology.
