Volunteers play a key role in supporting our youth across our clubs and Camp Mendocino.
Volunteers support our Clubs both as individuals and in groups. Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s (BGCSF) volunteers provide mentorship and inspiration, helping our Club members develop essential life skills. Whether assisting with homework, leading creative activities, or simply offering a supportive presence, volunteers are instrumental in empowering our members to reach their full potential. Additionally, the support that volunteers provide makes a huge difference to our staff, giving them the critical support they need to do high-quality work.

Group & Corporate Volunteers
Volunteer groups provide support to our Clubhouses on a one-time basis. Events are coordinated directly with our Volunteer Program and fill essential needs of our Clubhouses. We can accommodate groups of three to 20 volunteers. To get started, please fill out our interest form.

Every day, individuals like you make a positive difference in the lives of local youth at our Clubhouses across San Francisco. We are now welcoming in-person volunteers to support our essential programs, including academic support and wellness activities. All volunteers must attend an orientation to learn more and start the registration process.

Remembering Jack Bickel
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco honors the wonderful life of our longtime friend, Jack Bickel. For decades, Jack was a leader on the Board of Governors for BGCSF, including serving as Board Chair. Jack was honored by the Club in 2018 for a legacy of excellent service to BGCSF and was also past president of The Guardsmen and the Bohemian Club.

Old Navy
Old Navy continues to be an invaluable partner to BGCSF. This year, their employees not only volunteered at our Don Fisher, Excelsior, and Tenderloin Clubhouses but also went above and beyond by organizing a back-to-school drive. In addition, they assembled tote bags filled with toiletries and supplies for our youth at Camp Mendocino. Their generosity and commitment have had an impact on our community, further strengthening the bond.

Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco! The safety and well-being of our youth, staff, and volunteers is our highest priority. Please read more below about the current state of the program as well as safety measures we are taking and the protocols you can expect.
How long is the sign-up and orientation process?
It can take 2-6 weeks from start to finish. We hold orientations monthly, so the quicker you can sign-up and attend, the faster you will go through the process. After the orientation, it will take two weeks.
Where are the volunteer orientations held?
Orientations are held at the John N. Callander Administrative Offices, located upstairs from the Don Fisher Clubhouse on 380 Fulton Street, in the Hayes Valley neighborhood.
What are the days and times for volunteering?
Most volunteer opportunities are Monday - Friday, anytime between 2:30-7:30 pm. The majority of our opportunities fall between 3:00-6:00 pm.
What are the steps to becoming a volunteer?
At BGCSF, we put the safety of our Club members first. To this end, all individual volunteers are required to clear a rigorous criminal background check before working with children.
What is the volunteer commitment?
Most of the volunteer opportunities are weekly commitments. We ask that volunteers commit to volunteering at least one day a week for four weeks. However, we understand that there may be some schedule conflicts for volunteers and we will work around your schedules.
Are there one-time volunteer opportunities?
Yes. Every year, we have a handful of one-time opportunities that involve event support, art projects, and more.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Individuals must be 18 years old (and not in high school) or older to be a part of the BGCSF volunteer program and sign up for volunteer orientation.
What If I Am Younger Than 18 But Want to volunteer?
Youth who are 17 years old or younger or 18 years old and still in high school should not sign up for or attend volunteer orientation. They must go to their local Clubhouse and complete a Club membership application. Club sites have volunteer opportunities for youth to participate in during afterschool programming and summer camp. Youth volunteers will benefit from Club programming, sports and recreation activities, character & leadership development, job readiness, scholarship opportunities, and more. How long is the sign-up process for group volunteers?
The sign-up process usually takes 1-2 weeks. We ask that groups schedule volunteer opportunities at least three weeks ahead of time.
What types of volunteer activities are available for groups?
The majority of our group volunteer activities consist of working with youth to support them with academic, sports/fitness, and arts programs. We also love having groups help us with Clubhouse clean-up and beautification and/or Clubhouse events.
What is the maximum number of volunteers per group?
The volunteer capacity for our locations varies. We have one site that can take up to 25 volunteers; three sites that can take up to 15 volunteers; and six sites that can take up to ten volunteers. For special Clubhouse beautification projects, we can take up to 40 volunteers.
What is the dress code for volunteering?
We ask that volunteers wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Volunteers spend a lot of time on their feet, so we highly recommend wearing sneakers or other comfortable shoes.
What age group do volunteers usually work with?
Our Clubs support youth between the ages of 6-18.

Do volunteers need any previous youth development experience?
No. Volunteers just need a positive attitude, patience, and the willingness to have fun and work with others!
How do I sign-up to start volunteering at a Clubhouse?
The first step in the registration process is to attend a Volunteer Orientation session. During this session, you will learn about our programs, policies, procedures, requirements, and much more. You can view our orientation calendar here and sign up for a session. You may not register for a volunteer opportunity until you have completed this step as well as the additional requirements and have received approval from our Volunteer Manager to sign-up.
What are all of the requirements necessary to complete prior to volunteering?
Before volunteering in-person at a Clubhouse, volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation session, complete our volunteer application, submit a brief reference check form, and pass a LiveScan background check.
What safety requirements will be required of volunteers?
Before volunteering in-person at a Clubhouse, we will ask that volunteers complete and pass a LiveScan background check. We will also ask all volunteers to agree to our BGCSF Volunteer waiver, and Safety Protocols during each visit (via our check-in form).
What activities will volunteers be participating in?
Volunteers will support the essential programs and needs of our youth, including academic support (homework help and tutoring), teen services (college prep, career readiness), as well as wellness activities, like sports,fitness and play programs and art activities.
Is BGCSF accepting volunteer groups?
Yes! We are able to welcome corporate and organization volunteer groups to our Clubhouses. Please complete this form if you are interested in volunteering as well as receiving updates on group volunteering.
