At Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), we believe all children and teens deserve access to opportunity. Throughout the year, we work intentionally to connect youth to experiences that might otherwise be out of reach. Summer, in particular, allows our Clubs to be open all day, giving us more time to offer enriching programs, field trips, and new experiences that spark curiosity and growth. These opportunities expand perceptions of what’s possible, boost confidence, and help kids dream bigger.
Earlier this month, that commitment came to life when 15 of our swim team members met Olympic champion Katie Ledecky during a special event hosted by Athleta’s Power of She campaign at Gap Inc. headquarters. Through our partnership with Gap Inc., these young athletes had the rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the greatest swimmers of all time—asking questions, taking photos, and leaving with a renewed sense of possibility. Experiences like this show kids that their goals are within reach and that they belong in spaces where big dreams are encouraged.
Unique opportunities also come in the form of exposure—to new neighborhoods, new cultures, and new ideas. That’s why our summer programs are filled with field trips across San Francisco. For many kids, these excursions mark their first visit to places like the hiking trails of Lands End or the Exploratorium. These are more than just fun outings—they’re immersive experiences that help kids see the beauty and diversity of the city they live in. They broaden horizons and deepen a sense of belonging and curiosity. Whether it’s building sand castles at the beach or exploring murals in the Mission District, these trips spark imagination and foster civic pride.
Sports also serve as a gateway to opportunity. Through our partnership with the Giants Community Fund, we offer Junior Giants, a non-competitive baseball program that introduces kids to the fundamentals of the game while emphasizing values like teamwork, leadership, and respect. For many members, it’s their first time swinging a bat or running bases as part of a team. Similarly, our swim program ensures kids who might not otherwise have access to a pool or professional instruction can learn to swim in a safe, encouraging environment.
For our teens, we take opportunity one step further: career exposure. Through thoughtfully curated field trips and workshops, we introduce youth to a range of industries and professions. A recent visit to Guittard Chocolate Company, gave teens an inside look at careers in culinary arts, food science, business operations, and marketing. They met staff, toured the facility, and learned how a family-run chocolate company has become a global brand. Visits like these help teens explore their interests and imagine new pathways for their future. It’s about planting seeds—helping young people see that their passions can turn into careers.
Equally powerful are the moments when youth get to use their voices to advocate for themselves and their communities. This month, five incredible teens joined BGCSF leadership at City Hall to share how the Club has shaped their lives. From building leadership skills to preparing for college and finding a second home, their stories highlighted the critical role youth programs like ours play in making San Francisco a great place to grow up. We're so grateful to the City leaders who took the time to meet with us, including those who stopped for thoughtful hallway conversations along the way!
At BGCSF, we’re proud to connect young people to unique experiences where they feel inspired and supported. Summer gives us the time and flexibility to deepen that impact—opening doors and helping kids build the confidence to explore the city around them.

This week marks the official start of summer—and here at Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s Excelsior Clubhouse, we can already feel the energy building. At Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), summer is a verb. It’s about movement, momentum, and joyful, purposeful action. As a Clubhouse Director, I have the privilege of witnessing our members' summer firsthand.
From hiking under the redwoods to mastering our ropes course, from swimming in the Noyo River to mountain biking and archery lessons, every day at Camp Mendocino is packed with bold first steps and joyful moments that shape young people’s futures.
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) had an incredible time celebrating NBA All-Star Game Weekend! We were honored to be a beneficiary of the NBA Cares State Farm Assist Tracker program, which donates $1,900 for every assist made during the NBA All-Star Game. We are deeply grateful to the NBA, State Farm, and NBA Cares for their investment in our mission and our youth.
